Many feel the passage of HB 198 lacked the critical element of citizen participation. In fact Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer has called it “a deal with the devil.” The referendum gives Montanans a voice on what is fair and just as it applies to property rights.
Collecting five percent of votes cast across the state (or 24,337 signatures) will give Montana a voice and a vote for overturning House Bill 198 on the November 2012 ballot.
Collecting 15 percent of votes cast (or 73,010 signatures) will suspend House Bill 198.
Signatures can be collected up until 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30, 2011.
